The regulation covers all batteries placed on the European market, divided into 5 categories with different obligations: portable (sealed, up to 5 kg), light means of transport batteries (e-bikes and e-scooters), industrial (stationary storage, machinery and telecoms), SLI (starting combustion-engine vehicles) and EV batteries. It entered into force on 17 August 2023 and replaces Directive 2006/66/EC. For industrial batteries, the 2 kWh threshold is decisive: above it, the carbon footprint and digital passport apply. The category is determined by end use, and the same cell chemistry can fall into several categories.
