Raw materials are the stage that moves the score most: switching from conventional cotton to organic rain-fed cotton reduces the material impact by 25 to 40%, and post-consumer recycled polyester cuts the impact of virgin polyester by a factor of 2 to 3. Dyeing in France or Portugal emits 30 to 50% less than in China or Bangladesh. A narrower range, a price in line with the repair cost and, for companies that are not SMEs, a labelled repair service raise the durability coefficient, which lowers the score of the whole range. Reducing the number of colourways, optimising pattern making and extending garment life reduce the real impact, with no effect on the displayed cost.
