According to the framework published by AFNOR (France's national standards body) in June 2024, as summarised by Ecolab, an AI service is frugal if it meets 3 conditions: it has been demonstrated that AI is needed rather than a solution that consumes less; best practices are adopted by the producer, the supplier and the customer of the service; and the uses aim to stay within planetary boundaries. The framework lists 31 best practices.
