Data Centre

Physical infrastructure (servers, cooling, network) where AI runs. Around 3 % of global electricity projected by 2030.

Full definition

A data centre houses the servers and GPUs running models, plus the ecosystem: power supply, cooling (which can consume almost as much as computing), network. Global data centre electricity consumption could rise from around 415 to 485 TWh in 2024-2025 to nearly 950 TWh in 2030 (doubling, around 3 % of global electricity), driven by AI, with substantial pressure on grids.
