Must reflect the service, rather than the product. Example: for detergent, it is not ‘1 kg of powder’ but ‘1 wash of 5 kg of laundry at 40°C, over 100 washes’. A good functional unit is the condition for comparing alternatives fairly. It is the most consequential decision in an LCA.
