The method in brief

What is a life cycle assessment?

Life cycle assessment (LCA) measures a product's environmental impacts, from raw material extraction to end of life, across several indicators: climate, water and resources. It follows ISO 14040 and 14044; a published comparison undergoes a critical review.

Our product and eco-design studies

Which material should you choose? What effects can you expect from a change in manufacturing or service life? We study your products and their uses to inform these decisions, considering several environmental impacts.

  1. 1

    Life cycle assessment

We model materials, manufacturing, transport, use and end of life within the agreed scope. The results cover the environmental indicators suited to the study objective, with the associated data and assumptions.

  2. 2

    Product carbon footprint

Where the need concerns greenhouse gas emissions, we define a calculation focused on this indicator. Results are presented at product level and in the format useful to your contacts.

  3. 3

    Comparing solutions

We compare materials, processes, service lives or end-of-life scenarios delivering an equivalent service. The analysis shows potential gains and any shifts in impact.

  4. 4

    Team support and study reviews

We work with R&D, procurement and suppliers using the available data to clarify design options. We can also review an existing study, check a methodological point or help you complete a calculation.

Deliverables

A documented model and interpretable results

Each project concludes with documents your teams can use and keep up to date. The previews below are fictional: they show the format of the documents.

How a project unfolds

  1. Scope the study

We define the product, its use, the scenarios to compare and the questions the study must answer.

  2. Collect life cycle data

We identify the materials, manufacturing, transport, use and end-of-life data to gather with your teams and suppliers.

  3. Model and interpret

We calculate impacts, examine the main contributing categories and test the assumptions influencing the results.

  4. Present the possible choices

We present the results, their limitations and options for improvement, with a report and documented assumptions.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

The questions we are most often asked before starting a project.

Not necessarily. We can start with a product, a family or representative product references. The choice depends on the decisions you need to make and the diversity of the catalogue; the conditions for extending the study are specified within it.
We start by assessing the information available. Some data can be supplemented using recognised databases or documented assumptions. We indicate their influence on the results and which data it would be useful to improve.
The intended use must be defined at the outset. Public communication or a comparison may require a specific calculation framework and review. We prepare the corresponding level of documentation and identify the checks required.
We prepare a proposal after an initial discussion. It sets out the scope, the data to gather, the deliverables and the stages of the engagement. The quotation reflects the work to undertake and how your teams are organised.
