Is an email worse for the climate than a ChatGPT question?

421 questions from 58 articles available in English.

The published figures do not settle the question, because they do not cover the same emission sources. Leaving out the manufacture of the device, an email without an attachment comes to 0.11 gCO2e according to ADEME, and a written question to an AI comes to about 0.13 gCO2e on the server side, with global average electricity. With the manufacture of the phone counted, the same email comes to 1.6 g by our calculation. In every case the amounts are a few grams at most, far below the footprint of a meal or a car journey.
