Only 1 of the studies we read, a preprint, measured recall of a text written with ChatGPT, straight after the writing: in session 1, 15 of 18 participants could not quote a sentence from it, against 2 of 18 in the other groups, and the gap was smaller in the next 2 sessions. None of the studies we read on generative AI measures memory in general. A trial from Brazil, published in late 2025, gave a surprise test to 85 students who had worked on a subject 45 days earlier, with or without ChatGPT: 57.5% correct answers with ChatGPT, 68.5% without.
