Concept

Additionality

Principle that a climate action (project, carbon credit) must create an effect only because it took place, rather than an effect that would have occurred anyway.

Full definition

A central quality criterion for carbon credits. Financial additionality (the project was not profitable without selling credits), regulatory additionality (the project exceeds legal obligations) and environmental additionality (it actually generates the promised reduction) must all be demonstrated. Label Bas-Carbone standard (France) and Verra/Gold Standard (international). Do not confuse it with simply participating in a climate project (without demonstrating that the project would not have happened without its funding).
