Full definition
CCUS adds a productive use of captured CO₂ to CCS: injection for EOR, fuel synthesis (e-fuels), methanol, mineralisation in construction materials, carbonated drinks. The climate benefit depends heavily on the carbon’s final fate: CO₂ in concrete or a durable plastic is sequestered; in a fuel or a drink, it is re-emitted. A distinction is therefore needed between CCUS with long-term sequestration (materials) and CCUS with short retention (fuels), the latter counting as avoidance of equivalent fossil emissions, rather than atmospheric removal.
