Climate Tech

Ecosystem of technologies dedicated to reducing, measuring or adapting to climate change: low-carbon energy, capture, mobility, agriculture, GHG measurement.

Updated

Full definition

Generic term for all climate technologies. Includes renewable energy (solar, wind, green hydrogen), storage and grids (batteries, smart grids), low-carbon mobility (EVs, hydrogen, intermodality), buildings (heat pumps, insulation, smart buildings), industry (electrification, CCS/CCUS capture, low-carbon materials), agriculture (regenerative, alternative proteins), atmospheric capture (DAC, BECCS, biochar, ocean), measurement and monitoring (Bilan Carbone® software, satellites, IoT). Global VC investment: ~$70bn in 2024 (versus $30bn in 2020). Largest segments: mobility (~35 %), energy (~25 %), industry (~15 %). Do not confuse it with ‘Greentech’ (broader term including biodiversity, water, waste) or ‘Cleantech’ (historic post-2005 term mainly referring to renewables).

Also known as

  • Cleantech
  • Greentech climat
  • Tech climat

Key figures

  • $40.5bnglobal climate tech investment in 2025, first rebound (+8 %) after three years of decline (Sightline Climate)
  • 1,545deals in 2025 (-18 %), lowest since 2020: fewer transactions, but larger ones

Questions and answers

Where is climate tech money going in 2025-2026?

Towards energy broadly defined, driven by electricity demand from data centres and AI: low-carbon generation, grids, storage, advanced nuclear. The 2021-2022 frenzy has given way to a selective market funding industrial performance rather than promises.

How does climate tech relate to an ordinary company’s carbon strategy?

Two points of contact: these technologies feed transition plans (electrification, efficiency, capture for difficult processes), and buyers of climate solutions become a commercial target for those able to document credible carbon impact, backed by figures.
