Concept

Carbon Sinks

Ecosystem or technology absorbing more CO2 than it emits (e.g. a growing forest, DAC technology).

Full definition

Global natural sinks: forests (~3.5 GtCO2/year), oceans (~10 GtCO2/year), soils. However, they are weakening (forests declining through droughts, oceans becoming saturated). Essential for planetary carbon neutrality. At company level: pillar C of the Net Zero Initiative. Do not confuse them with CDR (Carbon Dioxide Removal, active removal technologies such as DAC, BECCS): sinks are primarily natural (forests, soils, oceans, wetlands).
