SBTi

Science Based Targets initiative

Initiative validating the consistency of corporate reduction targets with a pathway compatible with 1.5°C.

Full definition

Science Based Targets initiative, CDP / UN Global Compact / WRI / WWF partnership (2015). Voluntary approach to emissions reduction targets aligned with the Paris Agreement (1.5°C pathway). Third-party validation by SBTi based on sector methods. SBTi Net Zero Standard (2021) requires 90-95 % absolute reduction by 2050, plus neutralisation of residuals through permanent carbon removals (CDR). 5,000+ companies committed in 2025. Do not confuse it with CDP (reporting questionnaire, the tool for submitting data but not assessing the pathway) or with a simple unvalidated Net Zero pledge.
