SEER

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio

Seasonal performance coefficient of an air conditioner: ratio of cooling energy delivered to electrical energy consumed over a full season.

Full definition

SEER measures an air conditioner’s efficiency over an operating season (varying outdoor temperatures), unlike COP, which is measured at a nominal operating point. A SEER of 7 means that for 1 kWh of electricity consumed, the air conditioner produces 7 kWh of cooling. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the equipment. Orders of magnitude for 2024-2026: portable monobloc air conditioner 2.5-3.1; A++/A+++ wall-mounted split 6-11; tertiary VRF/VRV 6-8.5. SEER is required by the European Ecodesign Regulation on air conditioners (EU 2016/2281) and underpins annual consumption calculations in LCA. Do not confuse it with COP (nominal point) or with SCOP (SEER equivalent for heat-pump heating).
