Bioplastics remain more expensive than their fossil equivalents. According to European Bioplastics, the premium reaches 15 to 30% for bioPE and 50 to 100% for PLA and PHA, and the JRC 2026 report places their production costs 1.5 to 2 times above fossil plastics. This premium hinders consumer applications, even while European capacity was used at only 60% in 2025. It can be justified in niches where material properties matter, provided a multi-criteria LCA confirms the expected environmental benefit.
