A life cycle assessment (LCA) evaluates the potential environmental impacts of a product or service, considering the stages of its life cycle. It brings together data on materials, manufacturing, transport, use and end of life. In particular, it helps identify important categories and avoid an improvement at one stage shifting impacts to another.
The expected deliverable determines the study to buy
Select your objective to clarify the budget and exclusions. Three different uses, without ranking quality.
Screening : budget. A few thousand euros: an indicative order of magnitude, to be scoped according to the product.
Outside scope by default: A verified declaration, public comparative evidence or a study of an entire catalogue.
Your request may nevertheless be much more specific: choose packaging, prepare an ecodesigned range or send a declaration to a customer. It is the use of the result that determines the work to commission. At Celsius, we can help you scope a first LCA, including when you are still choosing between screening and a more detailed study.
1Which LCA do you need, and for what budget?
There is no single price for a product LCA. The three families below help position your need. These are distinct uses, rather than official grades or a mandatory pathway. Screening can open an ecodesign approach; a declaration intended for a customer requires different specifications.
An initial screening of impacts
Screening may cost a few thousand euros, according to the product, available data and content delivered. It uses a simplified representation of the life cycle to identify important stages and information worth investigating further. The quote must specify the assumptions and limits of this first reading.
The word screening does not designate a guaranteed quality level. A well-scoped preliminary study can be useful for guiding design. It remains insufficient if missing data concern precisely the differences between the solutions studied. Its result must state what can be decided and what remains to be checked.

At this stage, expect primarily a hierarchy of impacts, readable assumptions and a list of points to investigate further. A verified declaration, a public comparison or deployment across an entire catalogue are not implicitly included. The word "LCA" on the proposal does not guarantee these uses.
A study to drive ecodesign
Support can then include specific data collection, comparison of variants, sensitivity analyses and work with product teams. The price then covers a decision-making approach, with discussions and iterations. The Pôle Éco-conception method for choosing the assessment precisely connects the study level to objectives and available resources.
Diag Écoconception provides a public quantified benchmark. On 8 October 2026, the scheme’s official fact sheet states 18 days of services spread over 10 months. The announced client contribution ranges from €5,400 to €7,200 excl. VAT according to the applicable funding rate. This benchmark does not replace scoping the product and deliverables.
A declaration or comparison to publish
A study intended for an environmental and health declaration, or FDES, follows a defined framework. The budget must provide for the rules applicable to the product, required data and the verification process. A construction product FDES also includes health information; it is not reduced to a carbon value.
A public comparison between products also requires clarifying the conditions of the study and its review. ISO 14044 requirements cover in particular LCA scope, results, their interpretation and critical review. The provider must state the arrangements planned for the requested use before the company prepares its communication.
The comparison at the beginning of the article describes content to request in the quote. It is not a catalogue of fixed-price packages: the agreed scope governs, particularly for workshops, iterations and verification fees.
2What does an LCA cover in a study quote?
The term "full LCA" is not enough to describe a service. The quote must make visible the choices determining what will be calculated and how conclusions can be used.
The product and service to compare
The study specifies the product’s function, performance and period over which it provides the service studied. Comparing identical masses is not enough when solutions have different lifetimes or do not provide the same function. This definition, called the functional unit, determines the comparison and quantities to model.
For a coating, for example, the specifications may state the area covered, expected protection and period studied. Replacement requirements then become a data question to document. The work needed will depend on the availability of this information and the number of solutions actually compared.
Comparing a coating also means counting its replacements
Educational assumption: protect 1 m² for 10 years. A lasts 5 years; B lasts 10 years.
B does not necessarily have a lower impact: we still need to compare the quantities applied, compositions, manufacturing and end of life. The number of applications alone does not give the result.
Stages and impacts included
The scope specifies the stages included: materials, manufacturing, transport, use and end of life. The report explains any exclusions. A study limited to manufacturing does not, on its own, answer a question concerning the product’s entire life.
You also need to distinguish a carbon footprint from a multi-criteria assessment. An emissions reduction may accompany a different change in resource consumption or other impacts. The choice between LCA, PEF and product carbon footprint depends on the request. The company’s Bilan Carbone® has yet another scope.
Results and documents delivered
The proposal must specify a report and the elements needed to understand its results. According to the need, it may also include design recommendations, workshop materials, calculation files or data intended for a declaration format.
Usage rights must be discussed. A delivered report does not automatically imply an editable model, database licences or tool training. These elements may be useful for a team wanting to update its products. They must appear as identified deliverables, with their access conditions.
Software, platforms and your autonomy
A platform subscription and a supported study are different services. A platform may facilitate data entry, calculation and product tracking. Its value depends on accessible data, available models and export possibilities. Scoping, the relevance of assumptions and interpretation of results still need organising.
Ask who builds and checks the model, whether databases are included and what remains accessible at the end of the contract. We can help you choose the level of autonomy sought: have an interpreted study, reuse a model or train a team to update it. These needs are costed from the outset.
3What makes the required work vary?
The number of product variants matters, but is not enough to estimate the work. The difficulty also comes from what differentiates products, data quality and the robustness needed to answer the question.
Data collection and supplier data
A bill of materials describing masses and materials helps build the inventory. It may need completing with processes, manufacturing locations, consumption and losses. Working time increases when units need clarification, inconsistencies need addressing or information must be sought from several contacts.
The availability of supplier environmental data does not remove the need to examine it. Its period, scope and represented product must correspond to the study. For textiles or cosmetics, the information required varies with production stages and the conditions of use studied.
You do not need all this information before contacting us. From a product and available documents, we can prepare data collection proportionate to the need: priority data, contacts and provisional assumptions. This work also allows an estimate of the effort requested from your teams, who will need to explain manufacturing and validate data.

Variants and assumptions to test
A range may reuse part of the model if products share a comparable structure, processes and service. A significant change in material, lifetime or process may instead require additional work. There is therefore no automatic reduction in the second study’s price.
Sensitivity analyses examine assumptions capable of changing conclusions. If the preferred solution changes according to the chosen lifetime, that lifetime deserves particular attention. The budget must provide for the work making the decision defensible, rather than an undifferentiated number of variants.
Discussions, review and corrections
Interpreting results requires discussions with designers. Some variants are impractical, others change product performance. An ecodesign approach includes this return to the product and company constraints.
When a review or verification is planned, discussions with the third party and corrections must also be organised. The quote states who coordinates these discussions, what is included and how a scope change will be handled. The project timescale depends partly on this organisation, rather than only the initial calculation.
4How do you compare quotes and prepare an FDES?
Two amounts can only be compared correctly once their content has been aligned. Revisit the deliverables in the previous table, then check responsibilities and fees associated with each step. The overall budget also includes internal contributions and the services needed for the result to be usable by its recipient.
Fees, third-party charges and internal time
The proposal distinguishes study work from any verification, registration or licence fees. The company also plans its teams’ time for collecting and validating data. These contributions must be described even when they do not appear on the consultancy’s invoice.
For a declaration, the budget must cover the pathway to the expected result. A study delivered to the manufacturer and a declaration verified then registered are different steps. The INIES submission procedure in particular requires the declaration, verification report and verifier’s certificate.
Rules applicable to the product
The choice of programme and product rules precedes the calculation. The FDES, EPD or PEP guide helps position the need. An FDES follows a defined framework, but this does not mean every manufacturer is systematically required to produce one: the INIES FAQ distinguishes these subjects.
Reading a declaration for a building calculation also helps understand the data’s final use. Consulting examples acceptable for the target market helps formulate the specifications, without assuming all products follow the same pathway.
The quote must name the expected document and the conditions under which its results can be used.
5What does Bpifrance’s Diag Écoconception fund?
Diag Écoconception combines environmental assessment, identifying levers and a technical and economic action plan. It also provides for raising team awareness. Its content is therefore broader than an isolated calculation delivered as a score.
The amount and client contribution
The public fact sheet announces funding of 60% to 70%, according to company size. The France Num fact sheet specifies a total cost of €18,000 excl. VAT. The calculation is 18,000 × 30% = €5,400 for the higher funding rate, and 18,000 × 40% = €7,200 for the other rate.
€18,000 excl. VAT in services, two possible client contributions
The rate depends on the company category and the scheme’s conditions.
The programme provides 18 days of support over 10 months. Check eligibility and the deliverables covered before including it in the budget; a regulatory declaration is not automatically included.
These amounts are the public conditions accessed on 8 October 2026. They concern the assessment defined by the scheme. Any additional services, such as a catalogue rollout or another declaration process, must be identified in scoping and costed separately if not covered.
Eligibility and scope to confirm
The fact sheet covers SMEs as defined in European terms and states in particular an age condition. The pathway provides for an eligibility check then a discussion to define scope, method and timetable. The company must confirm these elements before including a client contribution in its budget.
The overview of support for climate studies helps position this scheme. You need to distinguish the product assessment from Diag Décarbon'Action, dedicated to the organisational inventory. Environmental labelling may also require a specific scope of work.
6How do you limit the budget without losing usefulness?
A narrower scope can reduce work while answering the question. You must nevertheless retain the necessary information for conclusions to remain usable.
Choose a pilot product and a decision
A first study benefits from focusing on a representative product and an identified decision. The team gathers its bill of materials, available manufacturing data and genuinely feasible variants. It also specifies the recipient of results and any publication need.
The low-budget LCA guide extends this logic. For a catalogue, grouping rules and model maintenance then become issues in their own right. The environmental labelling budget must incorporate this difference between a first product and recurring deployment.
Plan to reuse the work
Collected data may support future studies if they remain accessible and documented. The quote may provide for a transferable model, a note on assumptions and support for updating. LCA training may be relevant if the company wants gradually to bring part of the work in-house.
To prepare a conversation, gather the product description, the decision you want to make and, if one exists, the document requested by your customer. We can examine the suitable study level, missing information and the value of support for data collection or ecodesign with you. Tool choice will serve this need.
