The most widespread fall into 3 families. Drop-ins are chemically identical to their fossil equivalents: bioPE from sugar cane, partially bio-based bioPET, emerging bioPP. Dedicated polymers have no fossil equivalent: PLA, PHA, PBS, PEF, thermoplastic starch (TPS) and cellulose acetate. Attributed bioplastics are conventional plastics whose bio-based share is accounted for through mass balance. Drop-ins fit into existing recycling streams, whereas dedicated polymers, often biodegradable under conditions, disrupt these streams and depend on industrial composting.
