Full definition
BECCS combines biomass energy recovery and geological capture of the CO₂ emitted during combustion. As biomass sequestered atmospheric carbon while growing, capture prevents its return to the atmosphere: the net balance can be negative. IPCC AR6 includes it among the essential CDR approaches for reaching 1.5 °C. Deployed capacity in 2024: ~2 Mt/year (Illinois USA for ethanol, Drax UK for biomass combined heat and power). Structural limitations: competition for land use (food versus energy), availability of genuinely sustainable biomass, imported transport and permanence of geological storage.
