Greenwashing

Misleading practice presenting a product or company in a flattering environmental light without substantive reality.

Full definition

Legally governed in France by the Climate and Resilience Law (2021): ban on unjustified ‘carbon neutral’ claims, DGCCRF validation of claims. At European level: Empowering Consumers Directive (2024) and Green Claims (underway). 7 classic sins: hidden trade-off, no proof, vagueness, false label, irrelevance, lesser evil and lying. Do not confuse it with greenhushing (the opposite: remaining silent about climate actions for fear of accusations of greenwashing) or with an absence of climate communication (which can be a legitimate but distinct choice).
