Proof of Work

Blockchain consensus mechanism based on solving cryptographic puzzles (Bitcoin).

Updated

Full definition

In Proof of Work, miners compete in computing power to validate blocks: the first to find the solution wins the fees and reward. The more the network is used, the higher the difficulty and electricity consumption. Bitcoin’s network therefore consumes 138 TWh per year in 2024 (Cambridge CBECI), as much as Poland. All major protocols except Bitcoin have switched to Proof of Stake.
