Full definition
TranSensus LCA built the foundation of a harmonised life cycle assessment approach accepted and applied across Europe for zero-emission road transport systems. Coordinated by Thilo Bein and Felipe Cerdas, the project held its final event on 24 and 25 June in Brussels and published its consolidated guidelines in July 2025. They set operational rules: a mandatory cradle-to-grave scope for a product LCA; exclusion of development and marketing costs and employee commuting; a functional unit in passenger.km with one passenger by default for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, and tonne.km for heavy goods vehicles; reference distances of 200,000 km and 240,000 km; and dynamic modelling of the electricity mix based on a recognised energy scenario. The project also covers economic and social dimensions and cooperates with six related initiatives (ESCALATE, RESPECT, ZEvRA, CLEVER, HiQ LCA, RELIEF).
