The expected gains from post-lithium technologies (sodium-ion, solid-state batteries) are real but slow to industrialise: current sodium-ion does not emit less per kWh than lithium-ion (75 to 87 kg CO2e/kWh compared with 58 to 92 kg, Degen et al. 2025). The large-scale electrification needed by 2035 justifies switching now to mature technologies (LFP in particular for non-premium uses).
