Does ESPR make eco-design mandatory?

Not directly, but in practice yes. The ESPR regulation (EU 2024/1781) sets performance requirements for the Article 5 parameters (durability, repairability, recyclability, recycled content, carbon footprint, substances) that no company meets without a structured process. The Working Plan 2025-2030 prioritises textiles, furniture, mattresses, tyres, steel and aluminium. The first delegated acts start in 2026, with up to 30 sector-specific delegated acts planned by 2030. The Batteries Regulation (EU 2023/1542) already applies in parallel.
