Raw materials account for most of the impact: 68% of a complete bed’s climate impact according to ADEME, which estimates a total of 444 kgCO2e, ahead of assembly and distribution (14%), upstream transport (9%) and factory manufacture (9%). Technology choice therefore matters considerably: around 240 kgCO2e for a 140x190 sprung mattress, 290 to 300 kgCO2e for standard polyurethane foam. End of life accounts for 2 to 10% depending on design, and small sources such as glue and packaging film often create toxicity and VOC hotspots.
