No. Bilan Carbone® measures the company’s physical emissions, and purchasing carbon credits does not change them: it funds a project elsewhere (tree planting, renewable energy) supposed to absorb or avoid an equivalent quantity of CO2. Only physical reductions lower the footprint. Offsetting comes only after reducing everything that can be reduced, for unavoidable residual emissions. Presenting a decrease obtained through offsetting as a reduction creates legal risk: the 2021 Climate and Resilience Act regulates carbon neutrality claims, with penalties up to €100,000, and the EmpCo Directive, awaiting French transposition, prohibits claims that a product has a neutral, reduced or positive climate impact based on offsetting.
