Heating is the largest category: a 100 m² house heated by gas emits around 2.5 tCO2e per year, compared with around 0.5 tCO2e with a heat pump supplied by France's electricity grid, a factor of 5. The difference comes from emission factors: 0.227 kgCO2e per kWh of gas compared with 0.057 kgCO2e per kWh of electricity in France. The saving therefore depends on the electricity mix, since a kWh emits 0.385 kgCO2e in Germany and 0.773 kgCO2e in Poland, which greatly reduces the climate benefit of electrification in those countries.
