The impact is concentrated in equipment and infrastructure: a new smartphone represents 40 to 80 kgCO2e in manufacturing, a cloud server 600 to 1,000 kgCO2e per year (manufacturing and operation over 5 years), and a data centre 1,000 to 5,000 tCO2e per year. For a company, the main opportunity is therefore extending hardware life and spacing out replacement, far more than sorting emails.
