Full definition
According to IPCC AR6 (2023), a 1.5°C pathway with low overshoot requires a 43 % reduction in global GHG emissions in 2030 (versus 2019) and Net Zero CO2 around 2050. For an individual company, sector conversion is carried out by SBTi: absolute pathways (Cross-Sector Pathway: -4.2 % per year on scopes 1+2), or SDA (Sectoral Decarbonization Approach) for intensive sectors (energy, cement, steel, aviation). Remaining global carbon budget estimated at around 250 Gt CO2 in early 2025 for a > 50 % chance of staying at 1.5°C (versus 40 Gt emitted each year). Do not confuse it with the ‘well below 2°C’ pathway (a less ambitious target accepted by SBTi before 2022) or with a Net Zero 2050 target lacking a time-based breakdown.
