Full definition
Developed by ADEME and beta.gouv, Ecobalyse calculates a product’s environmental cost (textiles, and progressively food and furniture) in PEF points adapted to the French framework, using simple parameters: composition, mass, origin of manufacturing stages and durability. It is the official calculation method for textile environmental labelling, voluntary since 1 October 2025 (Decree 2025-957). Its approach: a calculation in a few minutes with increased default values when data is missing, rewarding brands able to document their supply chain with actual data.

Questions and answers
Is Ecobalyse mandatory for calculating the textile score?
It is the official method for French environmental labelling: legally enforceable labelling must be calculated under the current Ecobalyse framework. Third-party tools can implement it, but the reference calculation and default values are Ecobalyse’s.
Why is my Ecobalyse score poor when my product is environmentally responsible?
Check the default values first. Without data for optional parameters (spinning country, price, number of product references, air freight share), Ecobalyse applies conservative assumptions; weaving, finishing and garment-making countries are mandatory. 80 % of the work towards a good score lies in collecting supplier data rather than in the calculation.
