Action plan

Practical steps to move forward.

  1. Check what applies to your sector

Textiles: voluntary labelling since 1 October 2025 (Decree of 6 September 2025), publishable by a third party without consent since 1 October 2026. Furniture: method expected at the end of 2026. Food: voluntary method since May 2026. Cosmetics: no public method. No size threshold: a third party can publish the score of a microbusiness selling 3 T-shirts as well as that of a listed group.

  2. Start the product LCA compliant with the official method

Ecobalyse for textiles (16 adapted PEF indicators, plus microfibres and exports outside Europe), for food, and under development for furniture. The score is divided by a durability coefficient of 0.67 to 1.45 depending on range breadth and encouragement of repair.

  3. Anticipate pressure from private customers

Premium retailers, umbrella brands and demanding e-commerce businesses do not wait for decrees to request your scores. In several sectors with no requirement, pressure already comes from them: the regulatory framework is only part of the picture.

  4. Publish the score for your references

File the calculation on the official portal before any communication, then display the cost on the product, on the shelf or online at the time of purchase. Since October 2026, if a brand does not publish its textile cost, any third party can do so for it, using penalising default values.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Sector timetable, Ecobalyse versus PEF, penalties, product LCA: the questions that arise in our environmental labelling scoping discussions.

Textiles: voluntary labelling since 1 October 2025 (Decree No. 2025-957); from 1 October 2026, a third party can calculate and publish a product's environmental cost without the brand's consent. No sector has a labelling requirement: furniture awaits a first method proposal at the end of 2026, food has had a voluntary method since May 2026, cosmetics have no public method. See our detailed sector timetable and ADEME information.
Ecobalyse is the official French method (ADEME / Interministerial Digital Directorate) for textiles, based on the European PEF framework but simplified. PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) is the more comprehensive harmonised European method. For French textiles, Ecobalyse is the reference. See our 2026 textile labelling guide.
As textile labelling is voluntary, publishing nothing does not incur a fine. The rules target those who communicate: a displayed environmental cost must follow the official method, and an environmental score published on a product must be accompanied by that cost. From 1 October 2026, the main risk becomes publication of your score by a third party, with unfavourable default values. See our analysis of non-publication risks.
For a simple textile product using Ecobalyse: a few days of internal work if the data is ready. For 10 to 50 textile references: €10,000 to €25,000 excl. VAT for support, including a pilot at €5,000 to €10,000 excl. VAT. If the LCA is already complete, labelling is a free or marginal-cost by-product. See our cost analysis by sector.
Yes: Decree 2025-957 covers every textile product placed on the French market, whatever its country of manufacture. Labelling remains voluntary, but if used, the manufacturer, importer or entity placing the product on the market must calculate it using the official method.
No fine: Decree 2025-957 does not require labelling. However, from 1 October 2026 a third party (NGO, comparison site, competitor) can calculate and publish your products' environmental cost without your consent, using default values that are often unfavourable. Commercial risk also matters: your retail customers (Decathlon, Zalando, Carrefour Textile) already incorporate labelling compliance into their supplier specifications. See our 2026 textile guide.
