- 1Three distinct routes: MOOC to understand, short professional course to manage, specialised master's for expertise.
- 2The IFC.D LCA module combines 4 h online and 14 h of practice with a trainer, at €1,450 excluding VAT for an open course; Celsius helps deliver it.
- 3Digital and agrifood require their own exceptions: GreenIT and Score LCA for their respective scopes.
- 4The right criterion is not price: it is what the training prevents you losing afterwards.
LCA, or life cycle assessment, measures all of a product's environmental impacts, from raw material extraction to end of life. And it has become a pressing subject: environmental labelling is arriving for real, the digital product passport follows closely, and Bpifrance funds up to 70% of an LCA through Diag Éco-conception. As a result, courses abound at every price, and you can lose hours before forming an initial opinion.
Three LCA training routes
Before comparing prices and programmes, understand that these three families are designed for three very different situations.
MOOC
Directors, CSR teams, curious people wanting to understand
Manage or carry out an LCA
Short professional course
Scope, practise on a case and discuss results
Become a full-time expert
Specialised master's
Recent graduates, substantial career change
An immediate operational need
We tell you which we really recommend, why, and in which circumstances. Three distinct routes, a clear choice according to your profile: we explain when each course makes the difference and when another is better suited.
1Three LCA training routes, three different approaches
Before comparing prices and programmes, understand that there are three families of training designed for three very different situations. Almost all market confusion comes from putting them in the same category.
The MOOC: to understand, rather than practise
The CIRAIG MOOC (Polytechnique Montréal + EPFL) remains the French-language academic reference. 20 hours online, at your own pace, free. Five modules covering all the theoretical foundations. No paid course under €1,500 rivals its pure content. Its limit: no professional software practice or real cases to work on. It is the right choice to build foundations without having to produce a study - or as a free prerequisite before a paid format.
The short course: scope and practise on a guided case
Short courses meet different needs: understand a report, manage a study or practise using software. The IFC.D module, at €1,450 excluding VAT per person on an open course, combines 4 h of online preparation and 14 h with a trainer. Participants work in OpenLCA on a teaching case. Gingko 21, AFNOR Compétences and Lefebvre Dalloz also offer programmes to examine according to your objective. Compare time actually spent on exercises, prerequisites and materials provided.
The specialised master's: to make it your profession
Four reference institutions offer a specialised master's or a longer LCA module: Arts et Métiers, Grenoble INP, Institut Agro Montpellier, Centrale Lyon. A 1-year format, €8,000 to €13,000 excluding VAT. The target audience: recent graduates aiming to become full-time LCA practitioners, or a substantial career change. Not this guide's target, but worth knowing if you are considering moving into producing studies.
2Which route fits your situation
None of the criteria above helps until matched to your situation. The right course is the one that fits what you will do afterwards.
Which course for which profile
We have sorted the options for you. Three typical profiles, one route and one recommended course per profile.
Understand, scope, decide
Scope the assignment + provide data
Become a full-time practitioner
You will commission an LCA from a provider
For the SME director, CSR manager or product marketer who needs a sound message. You do not need to become an expert: you need to ask the right questions and read a report correctly. Recommendation: CIRAIG MOOC (free), then an AFNOR or IFC short professional course. Total budget €0 to €1,500, over 1 to 2 months.
You will manage an LCA internally with a technical provider
A common situation in SMEs and mid-sized companies: you manage the project, your teams gather data, a provider supports the technical aspects, and you present the results internally. IFC.D's programme lets you work on scoping, OpenLCA modelling and presentation through guided cases. Bilan Carbone® training follows a separate pathway: the two disciplines complement each other, but are not combined in this LCA module.
You are considering making LCA your profession
A substantial career change or a recent graduate aiming to practise full-time: choose a specialised master's. Arts et Métiers, Grenoble INP, Institut Agro, Centrale Lyon. This guide is not for you - but you have the four references to examine.
3The IFC.D module in which Celsius participates
Guillaume Pakula and Sébastien Pierfederici, Celsius consultants, are among IFC.D's trainers. We help deliver this module and disclose the connection so you can read our recommendation with that knowledge. Celsius's LCA training page presents the exercises, trainers and official registration links.

The LCA module's content and formats
- 18 h in total: 4 h of e-learning, then 14 h with a trainer, in person or in a virtual classroom.
- An LCA on a teaching case: scoping, inventory, OpenLCA modelling and interpretation. Assignment feedback complements the exercises.
- Methods and databases: ISO 14040/44, introduction to ecoinvent, indicator selection and introduction to PEF.
- Open-course arrangements: no methodological prerequisites, a maximum of 12 participants and €1,450 excluding VAT per person. Information checked on 15 September 2026 against IFC.D course sheets.
Criteria for examining other programmes
- Outcome: critically reading a report, building a first model or professional specialisation.
- Role of exercises: software used, individual hands-on time and commented presentation.
- Support: prerequisites, group size, materials and opportunities to work after the session.
- Pathway depth: a short course opens up practice; a longer programme lets you explore more methods and situations in depth.
4Two sector-specific cases outside the framework: digital and agrifood
Two sectors have such specific databases and allocation rules that general training is insufficient. For the other 90% of cases, the routes described above still apply.
Digital (website, app, cloud): GreenIT.fr
17 hours, €2,450 excluding VAT, digital LCA certification. GreenIT is France's longstanding responsible digital actor. Essential for measuring a digital service: data centre factors, smartphone end of life and cloud consumption are not covered in general courses. More expensive than average, but hard to replace within its scope - alongside our analysis of AI's carbon footprint.
Food or agriculture: Score LCA (INRAE, ACTIA)
Essential when working on agricultural or agrifood products. Databases (led by AgriBalyse) and allocation rules are highly specific, especially for animal co-products or regional climate factors. A general course leaves you stuck at the first serious study.
5What it really costs, and how to fund it
The true cost of training is measured in what it prevents you losing, rather than euros spent. Understand to decide: training pays for itself with the first avoided decision (wrong provider, wrong scope). Manage a well-commissioned LCA: return on investment from the first assignment, because sound scoping reduces the consultant's billed time. Carry out LCA internally: payback in 2 to 3 studies, but this is a horizon for those aiming for extensive internalisation.

Funding can be considered according to your situation, the organisation delivering the session and your funder's criteria. Qualiopi certification concerns the quality of the training process; it guarantees neither each participant's eligibility nor a reimbursement amount. Have these points confirmed before registering.
And for anyone wanting to fund the LCA itself, rather than only training, Bpifrance's Diag Éco-conception covers 60 to 70% of a first study's cost. This is often where the most significant saving lies, far more than in the training cost.
The right selection criterion is not price. A €1,500 course that prevents a poor €18,000 LCA quote is an excellent purchase.
6Key takeaways
LCA training can be understood along three axes: what you want to do afterwards, the suitable format and the corresponding cost.
- Three routes, rather than thirty: a MOOC to understand (free, 20 h), a short professional course to manage (€1,200-1,900 excluding VAT, 2 days), a specialised master's to become an expert (€8,000-13,000 excluding VAT, 1 year).
- IFC.D offers 18 h in total, with OpenLCA, a guided case and presentation. Celsius co-delivers the module; the Bilan Carbone® pathway is separate.
- Digital and agrifood require their own exceptions: GreenIT and Score LCA remain essential within their scopes.
- Funding: have eligibility and the amount confirmed by the competent organisation before registering. Funding for training and funding for a study are two separate applications.
- The right selection criterion is not price: it is what training prevents you losing on the following assignment.
A €1,500 course that prevents a poor €18,000 quote is the year's best expense.
